The health insurance industry has failed to improve overall health and delivered only out-of-control costs. In fact, the restrictive practices of \u201cmanaged\u201d care have created a completely dysfunctional healthcare system benefitting just the health insurance industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The problem &#8211; U.S. healthcare costs.<\/b><\/p>\n<ul style=\"line-height: 1.6;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The insurance-based healthcare system is highly inefficient and wasteful.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1\/3 of the $3.6 trillion healthcare market is spent on administration services controlling access to and delivery (or, denial) of care.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These wasted \u201cadministration\u201d dollars could be channeled towards coverage of more consumers for catastrophic care needs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insurance-based pricing and control of healthcare is unsustainable.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2\/3 of all the healthcare delivered in the U.S. is generally affordable routine <\/span>office-based and outpatient care.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No other insurances cover low-cost routine services except for the health insurance industry &#8211; and profits very well from doing so.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Routine cosmetics, infertility and weight-loss care are usually self pay and not controlled by the health insurance industry. Here we see market forces and cost control.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health insurance plans are not all equal &#8211; there are many junk health plans with narrow provider networks and narrow lists for prescription drug coverage.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health plans have promoted opaque pricing to limit price shopping.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health plans often deliver surprise bills.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The health insurance fee-for-service business model encourages over-delivery of care while capitation plans can lead to under-delivery of care.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Healthcare consumers pay hundreds of dollars in unnecessary coverage for routine care &#8211; they pay for routine care anyway with copays, deductibles and non-covered services while their insurance rarely kicks in.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The odds of millennials having a major medical or catastrophic event is low.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There&#8217;s no easy way for consumers to find and access as-need cost-transparent routine care.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Employers and particularly small business owners struggle to afford health benefits for workers or don\u2019t provide health benefits as they can\u2019t afford them.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Access to and delivery of care is tightly controlled by health plans and their non-medical intermediaries every step of the way &#8211; often working against your doctor.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doctors and patients have lost their healthcare decision-making autonomy.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your health insurance plan is now your doctor.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health insurance doesn\u2019t mean healthcare.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health insurance has not improved overall health.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>The health insurance industry\u2019s profiteering middlemen.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The healthcare arena is filled with middlemen who siphon off fees for \u201cservices\u201d that offer little or no benefit to either the healthcare consumer or doctor and only drive up costs. Dr Vorstman returned to Miami to become a board-certified faculty member in the department of urology, Jackson Memorial Hospital, University of Miami. Eventually, he left academic practice, moved north to Coral Springs and established Florida Urological Associates pa (www.urologyweb.com) in 1987. Dr. Vorstman is passionate about consumer-directed healthcare and helping men diagnosed with prostate cancer navigate the minefield of prostate cancer misinformation.
